In two weeks, SCW6 begins! Today the final program has been updated on the website, including room assignments. Presenters may especially be interested in the description of technology in each space. Find out about room tech here.
The WSA is pleased to announce the recipients of the SCW6 student travel awards (in alphabetical order): Eve Bennett, Hélène Frohard-Dourlent, and Derrick King. Congratulations! At this year’s conference, the WSA will be holding a silent auction to raise funds for student travel awards. We have received many great donations (e.g., a “Grr Argh” cutting board, Serenity ice cube tray, and Firefly cookie cutters), but there is room for more. If you are a Whedon fan, Whedon scholar-fan, or Joss Whedon himself, we would appreciate your donations of Whedon-related merchandise or crafts, including anything autographed by the man or his crew. If you would like to donate, please contact the WSA treasurer, Cynthia Burkhead, at caburkhead@una.edu. Thanks to Cynthia and Sarah Michael for organizing this activity. Upper Eastside Lofts (UEL) is a student housing community owned and operated by EdR and located on the edge of California State University-Sacramento's campus, walking distance from conference events. Find out more about this option on the Lodging page. We are now accepting deposits on UEL rooms via U.S. check or international money order as well as PayPal. We will require two payments from conferees: one night's cost by May 15, 2014, and the remaining balance by June 19, 2014 at the conference. Again, more information is available on the Lodging page. The Whedon Studies Association will provide three student awards of $750.00 to help defray conference and travel expenses. The current officers and current program chairs will select the recipients based on their proposals and other factors where relevant, such as attendance at prior conferences and/or publications. Please email slayage.conference@gmail.com by April 30, 2014, if you wish to be considered for one of the awards. Students must be registered for the conference before submitting their names for consideration. Thanks to Ensley F. Guffey and Mary Ellen Iatropoulos for providing this important service. Find out more here. More information is yet to come, but we are pleased to announce that we are official hosts of a Can't Stop the Serenity screening which will raise money for Joss Whedon's favorite non-profit organization Equality now. Check the event page of our website for updates in the weeks to come. More information for all conferees, including presenters and session chairs, has been added to the website's Guidelines tab.
